To better understand the benefits of these ingredients, we tapped into Rebecca Ditkoff, RD, MPH, CDN, and founder of health-coaching company Nutrition by RD. “The main active component in turmeric is curcumin, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It works by neutralizing free radicals and suppressing inflammatory agents in the body,” says Ditkoff. But since it’s difficult for the body to absorb turmeric on its own, she recommends mixing the spice with black pepper. It is recommended to mix the turmeric with black pepper because it contains piperine, which naturally enhances the absorption of curcumin. Luckily, there’s no need to add any black pepper to this smoothie. turmeric get absorbed.”
